Are You Ready For International Gruit Day 2015?

This upcoming Sunday February 1st will mark International Gruit Day – How will you be celebrating it? Actually, backtrack for a second and ask yourself: What is a Gruit beer?

Gruit or Grut (which means spice in German) and it is an ancient style of European brewing which became extinct due to the Reinheitsgebot, the Bavarian Purity Act of 1516. Luckily for us the style was rediscovered, and a few breweries out there have worked to recreate and reintroduce this to the masses using their own take on the style.

Some of the spices used in brewing gruit beer include but are not limited to: yarrow, bog myrtle, mugwort, heather, lavender, juniper and honeybush. But dozens more are used and recipes can vary greatly.

Now you might be wondering how to celebrate? Well the good news is that a few of our local breweries are participating in International Gruit Day and will be providing various takes on the style. Those breweries are:

  • Cambridge Brewing Company – (1 Kendall Square #100, Cambridge, MA 02139)

Cambridge Brewing Company will be pouring five different gruits on Sunday including Grandchester Meadows, Heather Ale, Weekapaug Gruit, Your Possible Past and Echoes. A full description for each of these beers is available on the IGD website and it’s worth noting that some of these beers were made through collaborations with Mystic Brewery as well as Earth Eagle Brewings.

  • The Mystic Brewing (174 Williams St, Chelsea, MA 02150)

The Mystic Brewery will feature three different gruits in their taproom on Sunday including Melissa, Grandchester Meadows and Your Possible Past.

  • Earth Eagle Brewings – (165 High Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801)

They will be pouring Echoes, their collaboration gruit brewed with Cambridge Brewing and Mystic Brewery. They will also be doing $2 off gruit pints (usually $6) and 20% off gruit growler fills on Sunday only.

If you want more information about International Gruit Day and find out more about the breweries participating, the style and various bits of other info, you can check out the official website over here.
