Big Updates from Down the Road Brewery

Down the Road BreweryAfter starting Down the Road Brewery from his basement out in Newton, trying to get the project off the ground since 2013, Donovan Bailey has finally issued some pretty big news regarding his project: the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC) has approved the brewery and is in the process of issuing them their license so that they can start selling their beers!

We actually met Donovan Bailey back in December of 2013 where he was a busy guy, honing and refining various brewing techniques and recipes and we were even lucky enough to get to sample a few of his upcoming beers including Quadruped, The Hop Monster, Patchwork Kilt and T-34. And while these three might show up at some point soon, for the time being, their release will feature their flagship beer, which is going to be Pukwudgie, an American Pale Ale which comes in at 4.5% A.B.V. and which features both Chinook and Mosaic hops.

Presently, while they await their license to be issued, they’ve managed to acquire their primary packaging including keg collars, body labels, neck labels, mother cartons and 6-pack carriers. Once everything else is squared away, they’ve also reached agreements to be on tap at two Newton restaurants: 51 Lincoln and Waban Kitchen. The former of the two will also be hosting their launch party which is to take place near the end of March. No date has yet to be set but a pairing menu will be featured so definitely keep an eye out on our events page for updates on that.

Last but not least, they’ve also announced that their crew is expanding with “George Popescu and Michael Halkiotis who are both coming on as co-founders. George is going to drive the company as CEO and Michael is going to get the tap room open and enhance sales as Managing Director. Our sales team is expanding with the onboarding of Matt Mantya and Jeff Quigley—Matt will be heading our sales in the Worcester area and Jeff will be doing sales in the metro Boston area. We also have Erik Jespersen who will assume marketing duties.“.

They are slated to brew their first commercial batch of beer at Mercury Brewing in Ipswich on March 5th so expect the beer to be ready for sale about two and a half weeks later. Establishment that will feature the Down the Road beers on draft include 51 Lincoln, Waban Kitchen, CasaB, Hopsters and O’Hara’s and the Newton Crowne Plaza, with more to come. Retailers include Craft Beer Cellar’s upcoming Newton location, which is slated to re-open in mid-March, on Austin Street, The Urban Grape in Chestnut Hill and more are to be announced shortly as well once finalized.
